Community Survey

Since October, we have been offering a monthly "Open Jam" in the Creation Lab.  During these Open Jams, we open the space for free to actors, writers, creators -- and virtually anyone in our community who has a creative project.  

Although many community members have commented on how neat the idea is, the last few Open Jams have been underpopulated.  People mention things like: "I really wanted to come, but I had to work" or "I was planning on coming but I thought I wouldn't know anyone." 

As we move forward with this program, we want to make sure it is serving our community in the best, most practical way.  By filling out this survey, you will help us identify how best to shape this program. Thank you in advance!

In the Creation Lab: Pilates for Creatives

Does Pilates scare you? It scares me too. I've tought and practiced it for years, and now teach gentle classes that encourage students to hone in on their core support while finding ease and fluidity through alignment. The goal being that you can go about your day with a greater sense of awareness and ease in your body. This is great and it works well for people dealing with phyiscal limitations, but as a dancer I crave creativity and I want to move through the space with my whole body!  Enter Pilates for Creatives.

This innovative class series will invite you to see your body from a new perspective, learn something new about your anatomy, and inspire you to move. Using imagery, and improvisational techniques to arrive into our body and awareness, this class will combine traditional Pilates Mat exercises with tools that get us off the mat and moving through the room.  

No Mat Required! 

$80 for the Series, sliding scale drop-in $12 - 15

Kundalini Yoga Series: Breaking through Blocks

Using the poetry of the Chakratic system, each week of this exciting series explores one Chakra and its gifts and challenges as they relate to creative process. The course draws on the reflections of David Bayles, Ted Orland, Julia Cameron and Stephen Nachmanovitch and integrates their process models with insights from Patanjali's Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and of course the Kundalini Yoga tradition. 

Learning breath exercises (pranayam), physical postures (asana) and meditation (mantra), students leave with greater self-sensory awareness and tools for dealing with the stresses and pressures of the creative industry, breaking through blocks and rejuvenating the mind and body.

LLOC #3: Donovan Woods -- live in the Creation Lab

This Friday at 12:30 – in the Fringe admin office. Bring your lunch, bring your co-workers, and cozy up in our spacious office for a lunchtime concert with local singer/songwriter Donovan Woods.  ALL ARE WELCOME!

Clever and engaging, clear and succinct, the music of Donovan Woods draws a listener in and asks you to take your coat off and stay awhile. An eviscerating singer-songwriter in the vein of Damien Rice and Iron & Wine, Woods invites us into his world through crafting meticulous tales full of triumph, rejection, and love.

Open Jam # 3: Jan 24th from 12-6

 

 

On Tuesday January 24th from 12-6 why go to the coffee shop when you can come to Toronto’s most lively creation space?  Bring whatever artistic project you’re currently working on and share the space with a community of like-minded artists!  There will be actors, there will be directors, there will be writers!  

Write emails, write a play, meet actors, do homework, read a play, network, complain, chit-chat, immerse, delve, experiment!  In the Lab.  Once per month.

Our two brand new studios will be open for anyone to use as part of their creative process.  The Neville Austin Studio (Neville’s Nook) will be a multi-purpose space set up with tables, a couple comfy chairs, free wifi, some markers and brainstorming paper, tables for your meetings, some space to move around or rehearse and free coffee.  Studio B will be set up as a break-out space to be used to test creative epiphanies and brilliant ideas on their feet or in privacy.

Creation Lab Artist: Phil Koole

Phil Koole is developing a clown piece for the 2012 Fringe Festival. He is utilizing the Pochinko method of clown creation, which he studied intensively this past summer at The Clown Farm on Manitoulin Island under John Turner (of Mump and Smoot fame).  This involves intensive mask and colour work to stimulate the infinite number of creative ideas that dwell inside us all.  Clown work is highly physical and emotional, so to do this work in a space such as the Creation Lab is a huge plus.  It allows the performer to move about freely in an open and neutral space, which permits the clown to more easily enter the dream state reality that is required for clown creation.

In Development at the Creation Lab: Other People

The Canadian Premiere of OTHER PEOPLE by Christopher Shinn comes to Toronto for a limited run, January 18-28, 2012, at the beautiful TANK HOUSE Theatre at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Distillery Historic District. OTHER PEOPLE tells the story of three ambitious young New Yorkers who struggle with sex, desire and their art over Christmas in the East Village. 

Directed by Dora nominee Aaron Willis, the show features the  talents of two time Gemini Winner and Genie nominated Tatiana Maslany (who is also the winner of the Sundance Breakthrough Performance Award), Dora Nominee Brendan McMurtry-Howlett, Dora Winner Richard Lee, Dora Winner Mike McPhaden, Ben Lewis and Indrit Kasapi. 

This play contains sexual content, coarse language, nudity, and herbal cigarettes. Recommended for mature audiences. This is a Canadian Actors' Equity Approved Co-op. 

Other People runs from January 18-January 28, 2012 at the Tank House Theatre at the Young Centre.
